WHAT IS BELLY BINDING?

Belly binding is a gentle postpartum practice that uses a long cotton cloth to wrap and support your abdomen after childbirth. It provides stability to your core, encourages healing, and helps you feel “held together” during recovery.

After giving birth, your body is adjusting in many ways — your uterus is shrinking, your abdominal muscles may be separated (diastasis recti), and your back and pelvic floor are under strain. It’s no wonder many mothers feel weak, unsupported, and not quite themselves in those first weeks.

How it Works?

Step 1: Gentle Massage & Breathing
Each session begins with a soothing massage to relax your body, improve circulation, and prepare your abdomen for binding. During this stage, I also guide you through deep diaphragm breathing to gently activate your deep core muscles and reconnect with your body. This combination helps release tension, reduce bloating, and lay the foundation for healing.

Step 2: Traditional Belly Binding
A supportive bind is applied around your core. It feels like a firm but comfortable hug — never restrictive. Binding helps realign your abdominal wall, reduce swelling, and give your body external support while it heals.

Step 3: Healing with Relaxin
In the first 6 months postpartum, your body still has higher levels of relaxin, a natural hormone that makes tissues more flexible. Belly binding takes advantage of this window by guiding your core back into place more effectively, giving you a head start before returning to exercise.

  • For natural births: you can usually begin belly binding around 4 weeks postpartum.

  • For cesarean births: it’s safest to wait 8 weeks, until your incision is fully healed and your doctor has cleared you.
